The Weekly Peep #3 — Sweepstakes crackdown accelerates as crypto casino deposits hold near $45B

Welcome back to The Weekly Peep — Peeped's read on where the money is moving in crypto casino and iGaming markets. It has been a busy five weeks since our first edition, so this one covers the ground since then: a widening US sweepstakes crackdown, a fresh look at the on-chain deposit data, and a resolved UK sponsorship story.

The big story: sweepstakes crackdown pushes players toward crypto casinos

The US sweepstakes-casino model — the virtual-currency loophole that let sites like Chumba, Stake.us and Pulsz operate casino-style games without a state gambling licence — kept losing ground this year. California signed a full ban in March, effective January 1, 2027 after a 90-day wind-down, joining Indiana, Maine, New York, Louisiana and Tennessee in enacting explicit statutory bans during 2025–2026. Illinois took the enforcement route instead, sending cease-and-desist letters to 65 operators back in February — including Stake.us, Chumba, Fliff and Modo — though reporting since then shows barely 2 of the 65 have actually complied. Stake.us also faces an active federal class action in Ohio.

The knock-on effect is the one worth watching from an on-chain-data seat: as the sweepstakes model gets squeezed state by state, industry trackers report the overflow is landing on offshore crypto casinos rather than the eight states with regulated iGaming. That is exactly the kind of shift that shows up in deposit data before it shows up in headlines.

The number that matters: deposit volume holding near $45B

The most recent published read still has tracked crypto-casino deposit volume at roughly $44.7 billion as of late July, up about 84% year on year, with the top three operators holding around 75.5% of it — Stake alone accounts for an estimated $22.1B across 32.5 million deposits. Reserve data from the same trackers shows Rainbet's tracked hot wallets up 16.3% quarter-on-quarter to $82.8M across eight chains, and Roobet's up 39.9% to $45.6M. A refreshed Q3 read is expected in October; until then, the concentration story from last edition hasn't meaningfully changed.

Launches: Spartans' global rollout is off to a fast start

Spartans went from regional beta to a full worldwide launch on August 1, and the pre-launch numbers explain why it is getting watched so closely: reportedly more than $100M in deposits within 60 days of beta and roughly $40M in GGR before the global switch even flipped, enough to put it inside the top 15 tracked platforms while still technically in beta. The operator has been public about targeting the number-one spot by the end of 2026 — an aggressive goal against a market where the top three already hold three-quarters of volume, but one worth tracking on-chain rather than by press release.

Regulation: the Everton question is answered, DCMS review still open

  • Sponsorship, resolved. Last edition we flagged the DCMS review into unlicensed-gambling shirt sponsorship as a threat to Stake's Everton deal. It has now played out: Everton moved Stake to a sleeve/back-of-shirt slot and put spread-betting firm CMC Markets on the shirt front for 2026/27, ahead of the Premier League's front-of-shirt gambling ban taking effect. The broader DCMS consultation on unlicensed sponsors overall is still open, and any full ban is unlikely before the 2027/28 season.
  • Payments. The UK Gambling Commission's Industry Forum is still in the early stages of exploring a regulated route for crypto as a payment method for licensed GB gambling — Tim Miller has called it a "tentative first step" with no fixed timetable, running alongside a separate FCA crypto regime that opens for authorisation applications this month.
  • Licensing. Curaçao's post-reform framework (the old sub-licence model abolished in favour of the Curaçao Gaming Authority) continues to be the default home for the major crypto books, Rollbit included, even as operators like Yolo Group publicly move toward tier-1 licences instead.

What we're watching next

  • Whether more states follow California's lead before the sweepstakes wind-down deadlines start landing in 2027.
  • Spartans' first full quarter of post-launch, global-scale data.
  • The Q3 deposit-volume update expected in October — the first real test of whether the top three's 75% share moves.
